Hard Water Is Quietly Damaging Granite Bay Pools — Here's What to Do About It

The entire community sits on the Penryn Pluton, a Cretaceous-era granodiorite formation, and the water that reaches your home carries dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from those Sierra Nevada foothills formations on its way down. What Hard Water Actually Does to Your Pool

The damage is gradual, which is part of why it gets ignored until it's expensive. Here's what's happening beneath the surface.

Scale buildup on tile and waterline

Calcium carbonate deposits — the white, chalky crust you see at the waterline — form when calcium-saturated water evaporates and leaves its mineral load behind. Granite Bay's hot, dry summers accelerate this dramatically. Temperatures in July and August regularly exceed 100°F, pushing evaporation rates up and concentrating minerals faster. Once calcium scale bonds to plaster or grout, removing it without damaging the tile beneath takes professional attention. Ignored for a season or two, it becomes a much bigger job.

Equipment damage from calcium scaling

Scale doesn't stop at the waterline. It accumulates inside heater heat exchangers, reducing efficiency and eventually causing premature failure. It builds up around pump seals and inside filter housings. Pool automation sensors and salt cell plates are particularly vulnerable — calcium scale on a salt cell plate can reduce chlorine output by 30 to 50 percent, meaning your system works harder and produces less. Keep pH and total alkalinity dialed in

The higher your calcium hardness, the more critical pH control becomes. A pH above 7.8 in hard water dramatically accelerates scale formation. Keeping pH between 7.4 and 7.6 gives your other chemistry parameters more room to work. Total alkalinity in the 80 to 120 ppm range buffers against the pH swings that Granite Bay's summer heat and heavy bather loads tend to cause.

Consider a partial drain and refill every 2 to 3 years

There is no chemical fix for water that has accumulated too much calcium and total dissolved solids. At some point, a partial drain — typically 25 to 50 percent of the pool volume — followed by refill with fresh water is the most practical reset. Your pool service provider can track your water's TDS (total dissolved solids) over time and recommend the right timing.

Annual tile descaling

Acid washing or bead blasting the waterline tile every one to two years removes calcium deposits before they bond permanently to the surface. It's a fraction of the cost of re-tiling a pool that's been neglected for a decade.
