5 Signs Your Granite Bay Pool Has a Leak (And What to Do Next)

Granite Bay pools lose water every summer. That's normal — evaporation in a climate that routinely hits 100°F in July is significant, and a pool can lose an inch or more of water per week just to the atmosphere. The problem is that evaporation looks identical to a leak from the surface. Both show you a pool that's lower than it was. The difference between the two can be thousands of dollars in wasted water, chemicals, and eventually structural damage to your pool shell or deck.
Here's how to tell the difference, and what the signs of an actual leak look like in Granite Bay pools specifically.
Sign 1: You're Adding More Than 2 Inches of Water Per Week
A useful rule of thumb for the Sacramento Valley in summer: if your pool is losing more than 1 to 2 inches per week and there's no significant splash-out from heavy use, you have more than evaporation at work. Run the bucket test to confirm — fill a bucket with pool water, set it on a step, mark the water level inside and outside the bucket, and compare after 24 hours with the pump running normally. If the pool drops significantly more than the bucket, you're losing water through a leak, not the sky.
The bucket test has limitations, and we'll get to those — but as a first filter, it's a reasonable starting point.
Sign 2: Your Chemical Costs Are Climbing Without a Clear Reason
This one catches a lot of Granite Bay homeowners off guard. A pool that's slowly leaking is constantly being refilled with fresh, untreated water. Every gallon of fresh water that enters the pool dilutes your existing chemical balance — your chlorine drops, your CYA (cyanuric acid / stabilizer) gets diluted, your pH drifts. If you or your pool service provider has noticed a significant increase in chemical demand over a few months, especially a drop in CYA without a drain-and-refill event having occurred, water loss is a likely explanation.
CYA is not consumed by sunlight or chlorine. The only ways CYA leaves a pool are through splash-out, filter backwash, or water loss. A CYA drop in a pool that hasn't been drained is a meaningful signal that water — and everything dissolved in it — has been leaving the pool.
Sign 3: Wet or Soft Ground Near the Equipment Pad or Pool Shell
If the soil around your pool equipment pad stays wet or spongy between rain events, or if you notice the grass or landscaping near one side of the pool growing noticeably faster and greener, you may have an underground plumbing leak. Pool plumbing in Granite Bay runs through soil that sits on top of granodiorite bedrock. A pressurized line leak will find its way to the surface somewhere, and vegetation response to that steady moisture is one of the more reliable indicators.
Pay particular attention to the area between your pool and the equipment pad where the return and suction lines run. These lines take the most stress from ground movement and are common failure points in pools that are more than 20 to 25 years old — which, given that most Granite Bay homes were built in the 1980s, describes a significant portion of the pools in this area.
Sign 4: Visible Cracks in the Shell or Deck
Granite Bay sits on granite bedrock that can shift subtly over decades, and the expansive clay soils that exist in pockets throughout Placer County can move significantly with seasonal wet and dry cycles. Both conditions put stress on pool shells and the decking around them. A crack in the plaster or a separation at the coping where the deck meets the pool edge is worth treating seriously. Not every crack leaks, but every crack that's exposed to water pressure is a candidate.
Sign 5: The Bucket Test Was Inconclusive
Here's the honest truth about the bucket test: it's a rough filter, not a diagnostic tool. It only measures surface evaporation under static conditions. It doesn't catch leaks that only occur when the pump is running (pressure-side leaks), leaks at fittings below the waterline, or slow structural seeps in the shell. If your bucket test came back clean but you're still seeing unexplained water loss, a professional leak detection inspection is the right next step — not another bucket test.
